REPORT FROM DALE FINCH ATTENDING THE WORLD U21 SOLO CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING
Dale receiving his rose at the Neustadt Donau Speedway Track in Germany
Hi Guys
I had an awesome trip away to Europe. I learnt a lot and got to race against may experienced riders.
I knew it was going to be very hard - and that it was. I scored 4 points with one DNF, due to someone locking up in front and causing me to drop my bike. For me to qualify I would have needed around 8 points.
The boys I was racing against were very experienced and were racing professionally full time so I was definitely the under dog considering the amount of races I’ve done this season they would do in 2-3 weeks.
The track was a lot different to what I’m used to in NZ. It was very long and slick so I found it hard to find the right set up and trying to change my riding style to suit. I only had four sets of four minutes for my practice, the day before the Meeting.
During the World Un21 meeting I got things sorted and got faster and faster and by the time of my lasted race I finished 2nd, a bike length behind one of the leaders of the meeting, but by then the meeting was over.
If I get the chance to go back over there, there are a lot of things I would do, like trying to get lots of track time on similar track to what the meeting would be held on so I was dialled in to the track before the meeting.
Speedway in NZ is a lot smaller than overseas so I think the more riders help each other out and share experience the sooner we will have more success when our boys go overseas.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone from Oreti Park Speedway, Elvin & Kris from SBF, Teng Tools, Grant from Thomson Welding, Ronder from SISS for all the effort they went thru to help me get to Neustadt Donau in Germany.

Tregoning secures Southland title
By KATE BUCHANAN INC

The sweet taste of victory – it's a flavour Grant Tregoning has certainly become accustomed to.
Tregoning added the Southland Solo Championship title to his collection at the Russell Cunningham Properties Oreti Park Speedway 10th Anniversary meeting on Saturday night.
It completes an impressive feat for Tregoning who has won just about every title he's contested this season. The New Zealand Solo crown is the only one to allude the self-confessed speed demon – and that's still stings a little bit.
“I really wanted to win the New Zealand title but had to settle for second,” Tregoning said. “But there's always next year.”
He's lost track of how many races he's won – in fact, it's easier to count those he hasn't claimed the checkered flag in.
“That's easier – it's only one. It's been an awesome season.”
Testament to his riding ability, Tregoning claimed the Southland title using two borrowed bikes which previously failed to even make the top 16 at the national championships.
Celebrating 10 years since the Oreti Park Speedway was resurrected, Saturday's fixture also marked the final event of the season and produced some spectacular racing.
“The track was unreal – it was a fantastic event,” Tregoning said.
In the solo event, Anthony Knowles, of Christchurch, was second followed by Oreti Park stalwart Paul Hayes.
Fraser Gillespie and Nigel Cuckow won the sidecar title, followed by Jason Harpur and Mark George, and Kevin McDonald and Karl Hosie respectively.
In the junior ranks, Hayden Sims reigned supreme, followed by Connor Spriggs and Peleti Woods, while Noel Caufield won the classic solo event, ahead of Andre Hodge and Nigel Luscombe.
Oreti Park Speedway will hold a Have a Go Day on April 10 for anyone interested in twisting the throttle.

UK rider claims NZ speedway title

UK rider Jason Bunyan leads Oreti's Grant Tregoning during the Calder Stewart Roofing New Zealand Solo Championships at Oreti Park Speedway on Saturday 27th February.
After racking up thousands of kilometres to get here, UK rider Jason Bunyan successfully defended his title at the Calder Stewart Roofing New Zealand Solo Championships staged at Oreti Park Speedway on Saturday 27th February.
Representing Auckland's Rosebank Road Speedway, Bunyan, 30, clinched 1NZ status ahead of Oreti's own Grant Tregoning and veteran Larry Ross, of Christchurch's Moore Park.
Qualifying fastest with a lightning quick lap of 17.25 secs, Bunyan then went head-to-head with Tregoning in the first heat of the night – and it ultimately proved the title decider.
Hailed as the King of Oreti, Tregoning relished competing on home turf and fought solidly for all four laps but Bunyan, who races professionally in the UK, managed to hold off the gutsy challenge. The pair went on to win each of their remaining heats, leaving the opening race, where Bunyan earned the crucial extra point, to determine victory.
Among the night's exciting action, the large crowd was treated to a glimpse of speedway's future in young star Anthony Knowles, of Christchurch's Moore Park.
Knowles, who is just 15, earned a dispensation to race at the national fixture and impressed securing fourth overall in the competitive senior ranks. His sensational performance even prompted speedway enthusiasts to compare him to the legendary Ivan Mauger.
New Zealand U21 champion Dale Finch was in podium contention until he crashed in the fourth round and was carted off in the ambulance. He returned after a thorough check to compete in the final heat – only to have his chain come off in the penultimate lap.
The hotly-contested Malcolm Officer Memorial Trophy for sidecars produced fierce racing, with the Oreti combination of Kevin McDonald and Karl Hosie reigning supreme.
The talented duo won four of the five heats to secure the silverware ahead of Scott Ayto and Josh Heenan and Jason Harpur and Mark George respectively.
In other categories, Craig Blackett won the Solo Support class, Noel Caulfield the Solo Classics and Hayden Sims the Junior Solo.

New Zealand Sidecar Champion Crowned
Speedway riders might be renowned for their tough exteriors, but being crowned national champion certainly brings out their softer side.
Palmerston North's Mike Zachan and swinger Paul Humphrey secured the Dig-It Earthmoving New Zealand Sidecar Championship at Oreti Park Speedway on Saturday night.
“I did get a bit emotional – I kept the goggles on until I got back to the pits,” Zachan admitted. “It's a pretty big thing ... I've been racing since 1999 and this is my first 1NZ plate.”
His skillful combination with Humphrey was impressive, despite being new this season.
“There was something special there straight away,” Zachan said.
A last-minute decision to venture south paid off for the duo, who also won the North Island Championship last month.
“I told Paul we were effectively coming for second because of the Australian entry – they're one of the best teams in the world – but he was still keen,” Zachan said.
“Turns out we just had to play our cards right ... and I had to keep my head.”
Darrin Treloar and Justin Plaisted, of New South Wales, certainly lived up to their reputation. The former world champions dominated every race by an impressive margin and the New Zealand title looked destined to head across the Tasman.
However, when officials deemed the pair impeded another bike off the start during the fourth of five heats, they were promptly given their marching orders.
Despite winning their final heat, Treloar and Plaisted finished a frustrating one point behind Zachan and Humphrey in the overall standings and were left fuming about what they viewed as archaic rules.
“That's 1980's rules ... anywhere else in the world, you'd never even be stopped,” swinger Plaisted said.
He lamented the $5500 spent on flights and transport of the bike, “let alone all the rest of it.”
“We just love going racing – that's why it makes it so disappointing when you get a decision like that,” Plaisted said.
Gisborne's Sefton Truuts and Calvin Foggarty placed third overall, with defending champions Les Plummer and Kervin Demanser forced to settle for 4th.
In the solo ranks, Oreti's Grant Tregoning proved unbeatable and claimed his fourth consecutive Brian Reed Memorial Trophy, ahead of Christchurch riders Andy Aldridge and Anthony Knowles respectively.
A shock admission from the main event, former 2NZ Russell Stuart and Andrew Parker, of Hastings, had a point to prove and easily won the non-qualifiers event, ahead of Oreti's Daniel Harpur and Nathan Phillips and Jamie Pocklington and Daniel Gillett.
Oreti's Noel Caufield took top honours in the Solo Classics event, while Hayden Sims won the Junior Solo.
Oreti Park Speedway will host the Calder Stewart Roofing New Zealand Solo Championship on Saturday, February 27, incorporating the Malcolm Officer Memorial Trophy for sidecars along with solo support, classic and junior events.

CONGRATULATIONS to Mike Zachen and Paul Humphrey - 97p (Palmerston North) - Winners of the Dig-it Earthmoving New Zealand Sidecar Championship. #84v Darrin Treloar and Justin Plaisted (New South Wales - Australia) finished with the 2NZ and Sefton Truuts and Calvin Foggarty (Gisborne) came in for the 3NZ.

Darrin Treloar and Justin Plaisted from Australia lead Sefton Truuts and Calvin Foggarty 61G (inside) and Derek Ramsay and Tony Hislop (outside) with Mike Zachan and Paul Humphrey at the rear during Heat 12 of the Dig-It Earthmoving New Zealand Sidecar Champs.

The 2008-2009 1NZ Sidecar Champions - Les Plummer and Kervin Demanser during the practise session on Friday 12th February 2010!
UPDATED 10th FEBRUARY 2010
NZ Title on the Line

The current 1NZ combination of Les Plummer and Kervin Demanser (from Gisborne) lead Oreti Parks 7i Grant Thomson and Chay McWilliam, 23 - Kevin McDonald and Karl Hosie and Fraser Gillespie and David Uitentuis into the 1st corner during a heat at the Trans-Tasman GP Sidecar Test Series last month.
They've staked a claim on everything from Phar Lap to pavlova – now the Australians have set their sights on our national sidecar championship crown.
Former world champions Darrin Treloar and Justin Plaisted are jetting across the Tasman to compete in the Dig-it Earthmoving New Zealand Sidecar Championships, to be staged at Oreti Park Speedway, near Invercargill, this weekend.
If their form at the inaugural trans-Tasman Sidecar GP Series earlier this year is anything to go by, the pair will undoubtedly be a dominant force.
But leading the quest to keep the title on New Zealand soil are defending champions Les Plummer and Kervin Demanser, of Gisborne, and the 2NZ pairing of Russell Stuart and Andy Parker, of Palmerston North.
The event is being staged in Southland for the first time in 19 years and Plummer rated the Oreti Park circuit highly.
“It's a great track – it would be one of the best tracks in the country. It's just a pity it's in the wrong place – it should be a mile down the road from my house,” he said.
He admits he's rather attached to the 1NZ plate and won't be giving it up without a fight.
“It's going to be a great weekend of racing – there's a lot of good outfits coming down and, with the Australians in the mix, it will be tight,” Plummer said.
“My plan it to keep my mouth shut, stay out of trouble and just concentrate on the starts. In a four lap race you haven't got much time so the starts are very important.”
Stuart agreed. “ If you can get your nose in front for a lap or two, there's a good chance you'll stay there,” he said.
“He (Treloar) is extremely fast – it will all depend on how we can foot it with them as to whether we are up there or not.”
3NZ duo Derek Ramsay and Tony Hislop, also of Palmerston North, feature among the podium contenders, along with freshly crowned North Island champions Mike Zachen and Paul Humphrey and Southland's own Fraser Gillespie and David Uitentuis.
Gillespie's bike was tuned to the Oreti circuit and he hoped home turf would prove an advantage.
“You always want to perform well in front of a home crowd and I'm sure Southlanders will be out in force to watch such an exciting field battle it out,” he said.
Gillespie and Uitentuis along with a further eleven local combinations will relish the chance to race against the impressive 34-strong field.
Qualifying starts at 3pm on Friday with finals racing from 5pm on Saturday.
In the solo ranks, 16 competitors will contest the Brian Reed Memorial Trophy with Oreti Park’s Grant Tregoning aiming to claim the trophy for the fourth consecutive time. Junior Solo and Classic races will be held during Friday's qualifying.
ENTRIES FOR THE DIG-IT EARTHMOVING NEW ZEALAND SIDECAR CHAMPIONSHIP ARE NOW CLOSED. NO LATE ENTRIES ARE BEING ACCEPTED. We have 34 combinations vying for the title.
To all the competitors racing at the New Zealands - This is a little heads up on Vehicle checking
If it is in the rulebook it WILL BE enforced. (Rules are for our own safety and that of our spectators whether we agree with them or not)
All you out of town bikes please be aware of the rules. Two rules in particular which seem to be overlooked at other tracks are the following two listed.
T9-2-5 (n) Covered in back wheel (While this is a deletion oversight when the rulebook was reprinted, it is still in the rulebook and it is a rule our vehicle checker enforces at Oreti Park.
T9-2-6 (b) (Steel cable of at least 3mm dia fitted to the first third of the silencer to the frame.)
Methanol run engines must have a methonal sticker on their bike.
The vehicle checker asked for this to put on the website so you are all aware of the rules especially the two listed above.
Safe travelling and see you all on the 12th February.

LATE ENTRIES
A reminder that late entries if accepted may start off 30 metres. You would only need to do the race programme and draws once to appreciate the reasoning behind this rule. One late entry can totally change the number of heats making all those hours of work a waste of time. By starting the late entry off 30 metres - nothing changes. Any complaints put your hand up and take on the job!

AUSSIES DOMINATE AT ORETI PARK

Overall winner Darrin Treloar and Justin Plaisted squeezes through between his two Aussie Counterparts #35 Mark Mitchell and Tom Golding and #75 Mark Plaisted and Sam Harrison. In behind is our own 11i Fraser Gillespie and David Uitentuis.
Australian riders reigned supreme in round four of the inaugural Sidecar GP trans-Tasman Test Series, staged at Oreti Park Speedway recently.
Former World Champions Darrin Treloar and Justin Plaisted, of New South Wales, continued their impressive domination of the series, once again taking top honours.
“Our plan was to come and win as many rounds as we could and so far we have won 3 out of 4 with one round to go so we are pretty pleased with that,” Treloar said.
“Our aim now is to qualify for the World Sidecar Champs in August over in England.”
The Oreti Park track proved challenging initially, with competitors forced to ride to the conditions.
“It was pretty slippery out there but the track came right by the end of the meeting. It was a shame the track didn’t start out how it finished,” Treloar said.
With some of the world’s best in attendance, racing was fast and furious – to the delight of the massive crowd.
After five heats, the top three qualifiers advanced to the final – Treloar and Plaisted, Mark Mitchell and Tom Golding (Adelaide) and Mark Plaisted and Sam Harrison (Adelaide).
A repecharge was staged to find the fourth finalist with local combinations Fraser Gillespie and David Uitentuis, Jason Harpur and Mark George and Shaun Kerr and Robin Poole joining Palmerston North husband and wife team Andrew Buchanan and Phillipa Burns in the hunt.
Gillespie and Uitentuis earned the right to contest for the overall title but the podium ultimately proved an all-Australian affair with Treloar and Plaisted followed across the line by Mitchell and Golding and Plaisted and Harrison respectively.
The Ivan Mauger North verses South Challenge was also contested at the trans-Tasman fixture, with the South Island team snatching bragging rights.
Oreti Park Speedway has enjoyed a hectic calendar of elite events in recent weeks, including the South Island Solo Championships on January 23.
The club’s focus now switches to hosting the New Zealand Sidecar Championships on February 12-13. With 25 teams already confirmed and plenty more predicted, adrenalin-pumping action is a foregone conclusion.

NEW ZEALAND U21 SOLO CHAMPION CROWNED

Moore Park rider from Christchurch Dale Finch does his victory lap after taking out the Permacoat Roofing New Zealand U21 Solo Championship at Oreti Park on Saturday 12th Decemeber 2009.
Christchurch rider Dale Finch well and truely exorcised any ghosts lingering from a horrific speedway crash when he claimed the Permacoat Roofing New Zealand U21 Solo crown at the Oreti Park track on Saturday night.
The feat was all the more impressive considering Finch has only been twisting the throttle again for the past four months after two yearsspent recovering from a broken back.
After qualifying heats, Finch dominated the three-round final series to secure maximum points and etch his name on the silverware. Auckland's Jamie Moohan was second, followed by Sean Mason, of Ngaruawahia, third.
The quest for the national title was not without its challenges due to a combination of weather and track conditions. While it took riders some time to adjust to the huge amount of drive their bikes had, they were left applauding the track manager Allan Shuttleworth's skill.
"His ability to turn a swimming pool into a race track is testament to his expertise," Oreti Park Publicity Officer Janene Stenning said.
"The weather didn't exactely play its part but the crowds were not deterred - our car parks around the track was at full capacity and everyone enjoyed an exciting nights racing.
"Its fair to say there were plenty of thrills and, unfortunately, a few spills."
Two separate crashes resulted in three competitors being transported to Southland Hospital. However, the trio have all been since discharged with no serious injuries - their now mangled bike suffering the brunt of the incident.
In the battle for the Peter Blick Memorial sidecar title, Oreti Park duo Fraser Gillespie and David Uitentuis reigned supreme, followed by Moore Park's Lionel Green and Aaron Ray, and Oreti Park's Shaun Kerr and Robin Poole respectively.
A hectic calendar planned this season, including the Ivan Mauger North v's South Challenge for solos and the sidecar GP Series - Trans Tasman test, featuring five Australian combinations, on January 9, 2010, then the South Island Solo Championship on the January 23, 2010. The action continues in February with the New Zealand Sidecar Championships on the 13th and the New Zealand Solo Championships on the 27th.

IMPROVEMENTS TO ORETI PARK
After a successful 2008-2009 season, the committee are heads down organising, planning and building to get Oreti Park Speedway in tip top shape for the New Zealand Sidecar and New Zealand Solo Championships that they are hosting in February 2010.
Thanks to the ILT Foundation, Oreti Park will have two brand new ablution blocks. Due to the ever increasing crowds at Oreti Park, it was decided that the hire toilets just didn't cut the mustard so with the help of the ILT foundation, the new toilet blocks are underway.
Receiving a large donation from the Pub Charity has allowed Oreti Park to extend and build new pits to allow all the riders to have sheltered pit areas. And on another view this will make it easier for the reps who find it hard to round all the riders up. - We will keep you updated on the progress.
GRANTS OFF TO THE WORLD U21 CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Friday 1 May 2009, our Christchurch based rider, Grant Tregoning headed off to qualify for the World U21 Solo Championship. We wish you the best of luck Grant.
